Home Fabric Design Trends: Best Materials for 2025

With over a decade as an interior designer, I’ve seen home décor trends come and go. And when it comes to fabrics, the options seem endless! From textures to patterns to performance features, new fabric technologies and innovations allow designers like myself to create spaces that are both beautiful and functional.

As 2023 gets underway, I wanted to share my predictions for the biggest home fabric trends for 2024. These are fabrics I’m already incorporating into client projects this year to put them ahead of the curve for what’s forecasted to be popular next year.

Sustainable Fabrics

Sustainability remains a top priority for many homeowners and designers alike. Next year, expect to see wider availability and applications for fabrics made from recycled and natural materials.

For example, recycled polyester made from plastic bottles continues to improve in quality and variety. And organic cotton, linen, jute, and hemp are go-to’s for their renewable origins and biodegradable properties. I often recommend these to clients concerned about their environmental impact.

Performance Fabrics

Performance fabrics that offer special properties like water/stain resistance, antimicrobial qualities, and more will push further into home décor. These technical textiles have historically been more popular in apparel and activewear, but new formulations now allow them to take on the aesthetics for fashion-forward residential use.

My favorite example is Crypton Home, which has a patented process that makes fabrics virtually indestructible – meaning they’re kid and pet-friendly! I frequently use performance upholstery like this in high-traffic family spaces.

Adaptive Textiles

Another area where I see home fabrics taking inspiration from the performance apparel industry is adaptive and responsive textiles. These fabrics dynamically react to changes in light, temperature, motion, and other inputs with colors, patterns and textures that shift accordingly.

Large-scale implementations can be complex and costly, but the visual impact is unmatched. I’m keeping a close eye on innovations from companies like Petit Pli as they work to commercialize some of these technologies and make them more accessible to residential projects.

Three-Dimensional Geometric Prints

Geometric prints are of course nothing new for home fabrics. But next year will feature more complex, 3D-effect prints that almost appear to pop off the fabric. These dimensional designs play with shadows and angles to create optical illusions of depth and layers.

I especially like the intrigue they bring to pillows, accent chairs, headboards, and other statement surfaces. And they pair nicely with many color schemes, from bold primaries to muted neutrals. Expect to see them show up across textile applications.

Nature-Inspired Motifs

Natural motifs have been growing in popularity over the past few years, and I don’t see this trend fading anytime soon. Ferns, leaves, branches, and abstract organic shapes will continue to flourish as fabric prints in 2024.

These natural designs are part of a larger embrace of biophilic design principles rooted in connecting people with nature. And they provide a soothing, familiar aesthetic. I often use leafy prints on window treatments to further blur the line between indoor and outdoor spaces.

High-Contrast Hues

While earth tones and muted color palettes are always in vogue for their flexibility and livability, 2024 will also see playful use of bright, saturated hues. These clear, high-contrast colors create vibrant accents against neutral backdrops.

Citrus yellows, grassy greens, and juicy berry tones will make for eye-catching fabrics, especially on upholstered furniture, area rugs, and decorative pillows. They bring youthful energy and allow for great flexibility in layering additional colors and patterns.

Global Artisan Craftsmanship

Handcrafted textiles connecting to artisan craftsmanship traditions from around the world will be popular for their uniqueness and sense of luxury. Kilims, ikats, suzanis, mudmee, and other specialty weaving techniques embedded with cultural heritage offer statement-making fabrics.

I appreciate the richness and specialty touch these global textiles contribute through their one-of-a-kind qualities. I often source them as pass-down heirlooms for clients wanting a fabric with history. Or I’ll design custom upholstered furniture or pillows around them as the inspiration.

High-Touch Textures

Fabrics don’t always have to be visually striking to be interesting. Next year, expect more focus on tactile qualities and fabrics with depth and dimension. Think sophisticated chenilles, nubby bouclés, plush velvets, and soft shearlings.

These cozy, textural fabrics invite touch and create wonderful contrast and dimension through their fiber compositions and weave structures. They promote relaxation while adding tasteful sophistication. I encourage clients to consider statement armchairs or headboards upholstered in these high-touch fabrics.

Final Thoughts

The fabric options for residential interiors continue to grow exponentially year over year. And 2024 will be no exception with advancements in sustainable materials, performance qualities, and textural interest leading the way alongside playful prints and global artisan influences.

As a designer, it’s exciting to have such a diverse palette for creating personalized spaces that not only look beautiful but also connect on a deeper level with responsiveness, functionality, and meaning.
