As an avid paddler with over 7 years of kayaking and canoeing experience across North America and Europe. I’m always seeking out new destinations that offer stunning scenery and optimal conditions for my favorite water sports. Based on my extensive research and personal trips planned for 2024. I wanted to share my list of top destinations that provide paddlers with the best opportunities for fun and relaxation next year.
With proper precautions and responsible planning, these premier paddling locations promise beautiful vistas, and exotic wildlife encounters. Just the right blend of adventure and tranquility to appeal to beginners and experts alike.
British Columbia’s Gulf Islands
Located between Vancouver Island and the mainland, the Gulf Islands in British Columbia remain one of my all-time favorite paddling playgrounds after numerous multi-day expeditions over the years. With over a dozen large islands and hundreds of smaller islets to explore, kayakers can meander through sheltered waterways and observe lively intertidal zones teeming with starfish, crabs, and shorebirds.
I especially enjoy camping along the cliffs of Galiano and Valdes Islands to take in magical Pacific Ocean sunsets after days spent visiting local galleries, farms, vineyards, and beaches. With the Gulf Islands, you get the perfect mix of nature’s beauty and modern amenities.

Glacier Bay, Alaska
For my next big paddling adventure, I have my sights set on Glacier Bay National Park in Alaska, which protects over 100 miles of majestic tidewater glaciers that calve icebergs into the sea. Visitors can even paddle right up to the face of some glaciers that descend from the ice-covered Fairweather Mountain Range.
In addition to the icy formations, paddlers may spot harbor seals, sea otters, puffins, humpback whales and brown bears along the shorelines. With epic scenery and diverse wildlife, Glacier Bay promises to be an unforgettable destination in 2024. Just be sure to dress warmly!

The Florida Saltwater Trail
Stretching over 1500 miles around the entire state, Florida’s Saltwater Trail System connects paddlers to the Sunshine State’s most beautiful coastlines and inland waterways. As a nice change of pace from Glacier Bay, I’m looking forward to tackling sections like the Big Bend Saltwater Trail along the Panhandle and the Chain of Lakes Trail around Winter Haven next year.
The well-marked routes showcase mangrove tunnels, clear springs, sandy beaches, historic forts, and coastal hammocks. The temperate climate also enables comfortable paddling during winter months when much of North America is frozen over. Talk about paradise!

The Dalmatian Islands, Croatia
After years of exploring North American waters, I’m excited to venture across the Atlantic in 2024 to paddle along the Dalmatian Coast of Croatia where pine-fringed islands dot the Adriatic Sea. This European destination has been on my bucket list for ages and I finally have a trip in the works!
Based on my research, some highlights will include sea kayaking into breathtaking azure grottoes on Biševo Island. Snorkeling in the clear waters around Kornati Islands National Park, and sampling delicious local cuisine after pulling my kayak onto pebbly beaches at the end of each day. With ancient walled cities, classic Mediterranean villages, and no shortage of stunning seaside paddling, Croatia is sure to enchant.

The Florida Keys
Much closer to home, the Florida Keys comprise my favorite tropical paddling destination along the East Coast. Stretching 220 miles from Miami to Key West. This island chain offers calm blue waters sandwiched between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. Both sea kayaks and canoes can easily traverse the area.
I’ve already explored the Middle and Lower Keys on several trips. But for 2024 I have my sights set on The Everglades and Florida Bay. This route winds through lush mangrove forests, quiet lagoons, and serene inland waterways where dolphins, manatees, and over 200 species of birds reside. To cap off full days of paddling, Key West offers exceptional resort amenities, delectable seafood, and live entertainment at sunset.

Just securing the necessary time off work remains my greatest challenge!
