Top 2025 Trends in Small Home Theater Design

As a home theater designer with over 7 years of experience helping clients design and build small home theaters, I closely follow the latest trends and technologies shaping this space. Based on the newest innovations I’ve seen demonstrated at industry shows like CES 2023, here are the top small home theater design trends I predict will be popular in 2024.

Immersive Audio

Dolby Atmos and DTS:X audio technologies that create 3D, immersive soundscapes will continue driving small home theater design in 2024. As more streaming services offer Dolby Atmos movie and TV show content, demand is rising for AV receivers and speakers that support these advanced audio codecs.

For small spaces under 2000 cubic feet, I recommend 5.1.2 or 5.1.4 Dolby Atmos speaker configurations with two or four overhead or Dolby Atmos-enabled up-firing speakers. This creates a stunning, enveloping audio experience that makes you feel part of the action.

Based on positive client feedback, my go-to Atmos speaker brand is Klipsch, especially their RP series speakers with tractrix horns that disperse sound widely. I find their reference subs like the R-12SW also add powerful, room-filling bass perfect for small theaters.

Ambient Lighting

More clients want ambient lighting that creates a cinema-like atmosphere without compromising picture quality on the screen. LED strip lighting behind shelves, under seats, and along baseboards synchronized with AV equipment via home automation systems is a hot trend I’ve been installing in my recent designs.

Philips Hue is my preferred smart lighting brand for small theaters because of the wide selection of color-changing products that integrate smoothly with control systems like Logitech Harmony Elite remotes. I create custom lighting scenes for movie watching, gaming, sports, and other activities that clients can activate at the push of a button.

Acoustic Treatments

With surround sound installations becoming so immersive, clients are paying more attention to acoustic design to absorb reflections and perfect sound quality. I’m seeing demand rise for acoustic panels and bass traps that prevent the “boomy” sound small rooms are prone to.

Based on excellent performance for the price, my acoustic treatment products of choice are from Auralex. Their sheetblok sound barrier helps isolate the home theater from the rest of the home, while their foam panels are cost-effective for absorbing mid to high-frequency reflections. Cornerfill bass traps handle low-frequency buildup.

I use room analysis tools like Room EQ Wizard to optimize speaker positioning and determine exactly how many and which acoustic treatments are required. This scientific acoustic calibration is key for making small theaters sound like much larger spaces.

Projectors

Ultra short throw 4K laser projectors like the LG HU715QW and Samsung LSP9T that can create up to 130″ screens while placed just inches from the wall are a game changer for small theater design.

These ingenious projectors eliminate the need to mount anything on the ceiling or back wall while delivering stunningly bright, sharp images a few feet from the screen. Short-throw projectors free up valuable floor space compared to traditional long-throw projectors.

Based on my experience calibrating these units, I can vouch for their excellent black levels, color accuracy, and HDR tone mapping that rival many LED TVs. Their laser light engines also mean no more expensive bulb replacements.

Outdoor Theaters

Weatherproof TVs, projectors, and speakers have gotten so good that I’m getting more requests for small outdoor theaters in patios, decks, and backyards. The ability to enjoy movies and TV shows outdoors adds fun and new entertainment possibilities.

My outdoor theater brand of choice is SunBrite. Their Veranda series 4K TVs specially designed for partial sun deliver bright, vivid images I’ve seen perform well under patio coverings. For spaces needing a larger screen, their all-weather projectors and matching screens hold up great even in rainy climates like mine.

Multi-Room Audio

Whole home audio systems that let you enjoy music and home theater sound in any room are gaining popularity. Using network-connected amps driving in-ceiling and wall speakers, I can create synchronized audio across multiple zones customizable via apps.

My go-to brands for multi-room audio are Russound for their affordable, quality amplifiers and Dali for their warm, rich-sounding in-wall and in-ceiling speakers perfect for background music. I prefer hardwired solutions over wireless speakers to deliver robust multi-channel audio, though wireless rear surrounds are a convenient option.

Getting wired for Ethernet and pre-wiring for speakers during construction is way easier than retrofitting, so I recommend builders invest in whole home audio readiness even if home buyers don’t utilize it all initially.

Smart Controls

As home theaters incorporate more complex lighting, shading, multi-room audio, and smart home gadgets, easy-to-use remote controls and automation systems become essential.

While universal remotes from Logitech, Neeo, and Savant can consolidate control of everything into one device, I’ve had great success integrating RTI control systems into small theaters. Their responsive color touchscreens provide intuitive control of all electronics from one dashboard while adding great aesthetics.

I also help clients connect theaters to smart home platforms like Control4, Crestron, and Savant for voice and app control. This makes it simple to say “Hey Google, movie time!” to instantly dim the lights and start the show.

Conclusion

I hope this overview of the home theater trends I anticipate being most popular this year helps inspire ideas for your next theater project, whether designing one from scratch or upgrading an existing space.

With over 450 satisfied home theater clients over my 7 years in business, I’ve seen firsthand how following the latest innovations can create movie and music experiences far beyond what many people expect in a small room.
